My internship with the Greek Telephone Directory was by far my most beneficial college experience. As Panhellenic President, I can definitely see the students at the University of Nebraska benefiting from the books, as well as many businesses in our community. Throughout my college experience I knew that I was interested in a career in business, yet I was unable to find my niche. Over the past summer, with the help of the GTD, I was able to discover that a career in sales was definitely in my future. As I have been interviewing for post graduation jobs, I know that my sales experience is putting me ahead of the game. The tools I developed through the hands on experience working with the Greek Telephone Directory has been priceless! I would highly recommend it to anyone! Don't let yourself miss out!

To get a job in today's economy, you need to be more than another name in the stack. You need something on your resume that you can point out to recruiters and say "this is what I am most proud of". You need to be able to show them something that you did all by yourself. Anyone can file papers in an office as a "clerical intern", and recruiters know this. Ever since I put my GTD achievements on my resume (managed 70 advertising accounts, generated $32,000 in revenue with 25% growth from previous year, etc.) I have been accepted for 6 interviews and received 5 job offers, not to mention the 5 job offers I received from business owners throughout the summer. The GTD gives you every tool that you will need to be a successful representative, but how you put them to use is up to you. The benefits of this position are endless, so put down that spatula, quit flipping burgers, and dive into a summer of practical experience that you will never forget.

Want to change your life in one summer? Well I certainly didn't think this was possible, until my internship with the Greek Telephone Directory. Serving as an Account Executive gave me the opportunity to develop skills that set me apart from others in the workforce. I can honestly say that,“if it weren’t for The Greek Telephone Directory, I would not have landed the sales position I’m in at such a young age.” With more people graduating from college year after year in such a competitive job market, it’s becoming harder and harder for college students to get a job right after graduation. What set me apart from all the other and older interviewees was the fact that The GTD had provided me with the recourses I needed to prove that I was the more qualified and experienced candidate. I was able to show my future employer that I was capable of managing my time wisely, executing proper follow up, being persistent, achieving set goals, and maintaining a positive mind frame in all situations. Not to mention, the position required a second interview; I didn’t fall into that category. Because of the skills and experience I have acquired through the GTD, I was considered “over qualified” and hired right away.

Last summer, I did the Greek Telephone Directory internship, and I have to say that I have never had an experience quite like it. It was so fun that I couldn't think of it as work! Because of the experience I received through this internship, I have the skills needed for survival in the collegiate world - and beyond. It has to be said - I am not a marketing major. But, no matter what your future plans are, one way or another, you will have to marketing yourself. Whether it's to the graduate school you want to attend or to a CEO you want to hire you, we all need to know how to market ourselves. And the money!!! Let's put it this way, I don't have to work again for quite a while! The prestige that comes along with knowing that I've sold over $30,000 worth of advertisement space is reward enough, but the monetary value helps just the same! To have the opportunity to be a part of something this huge is so awesome; it really offers a chance to see what the real world is like, and how much fun it can be.

This past summer I learned so much about what it takes to be successful because I operated in an environment where I controlled the effort I applied and the rewards I gained. At the time, I thought that I would be able to sell anything that was put in front of me. The Greek Directory sold itself. You may not believe this, but I honestly feel as though the GTD internship has had a direct influence on my future. Before my internship, I really had no idea what I was interested in pursuing. After completing the internship, I knew I would be successful in sales. This internship has strengthen my people skills, and has allowed me to gain confidence in my sales performance. This summer, I competed with local television and radio station account executives, yellow pages, local newspapers and other directories, and was able to even offer better deals than some of my competitors. The networking skills that I received this summer are unbelievable. Working in a smaller market allowed me to really connect with people in the community. I am still recognized by store owners, and I have kept good relationships with all of my clients. Whenever my friends mention a store or restaurant in Knoxville, I am always SO proud to boast that they were one of my clients this summer. This internship has made me confident that I can be very successful as a sales executive after graduation. I think the most important part about sales is to believe in the product you are selling. I fully believe that the Greek Telephone Directory is an excellent means to reach college Greek students. Our training prepared us for almost everything we encountered this summer. Working for the Greek Telephone Directory was a perfect taste of what the real business world was going to be like upon graduation. From the exciting and informative training session in Los Angeles to the building of relationships with clients to the thrill of an actual sale, the GTD left me with the skills necessary to succeed in a job. One quick success story - After dealing with a client all summer about running an ad, I finally sold one on the last day of summer. I helped him come up with a promotion for his deli to have half-price food on Sundays if you wore your Greek letters. The Sunday after the book hit campus, I went to the deli to check it out. The place was packed with students decked out in their Greek apparel. The owner actually ran out of food and he was amazed at the awesome buying power that Greeks have. Since I am graduating this semester, all I ever talk about in interviews is my great experience with the GTD while other students are left talking about their summer fetching coffee or flipping burgers.

My experience this summer working for The Greek Telephone Directory was amazing. I remember the first day, I was so discouraged because I had to call my sales manager and tell him I didn’t sell anything. Needless to say, he calmed me down and helped me work on my pitch, and by the end of the week, I had sold twice as many as my goal. Each time I had a challenging client, he would remind me of that day and tell me to stick with it. I did, and it turned out to be one of the most valuable learning experiences I’ve ever had. I am applying for jobs now, and each time an interviewer asks me to discuss something I am proud of I take out the GTD and can’t quick talking about it. My clients to this day know my name and speak to me when I walk into their business. It’s an awesome feeling.

Stepping onto the plane headed to LA, I never knew what this experience was going to give me. I applied for the internship knowing that it would look good on my resume and help me get a little experience, but I did not know how much I would learn from my GTD experience. I am a Pi Beta Phi at the University of Kentucky. When I first heard about the internship for The Greek Telephone Directory, it sounded like a wonderful opportunity. I went through all the phone interviews and wasn't exactly sure that I would be chosen, due to the fact that there are so many other students at UK that would be interested in the internship as well. Once I got the phone call, telling me that I was chosen to be the account executive for the Greek Telephone Directory I was thrilled. Going into this there were so many things running through my mind as to how well I would do or what types of situations I was going to have to face. After three months of this internship, I can definitely say that is changed me as a person. It taught me to learn how to deal with different types of people, it has prepared me for what I will be doing for the rest of my life, and it has taught me to be more independent. This is a real job and to be a part of the whole experience is the most rewarding of all. The GTD has taught me so much throughout the entire experience, more so than any of my college professors have. This is a hands on experience that I am very gracious to have been part of.

As a second year member of Alpha Phi at UC Santa Barbara, I knew that scoring an internship was imperative for obtaining a career after college. When I first started as an intern with the Greek Telephone Directory I was not entirely sure how I was going to do as a salesman. What a way to spend my summer...by interning for the Greek Telephone Directory, I was able have a great time living in College Park with my best friends, while making more money than any of them were by life guarding or waitressing! And I certainly had a much better time than those I knew who were interning for other companies--no paper-pushing or tedious office filing here! Instead, I was out every day, making contacts in the local business community, discovering great new shops and restaurants, and signing Maryland students' favorite retailers, bars, and eateries to ads. I gained so much confidence and poise, and learned how to market myself as well as the product. I can't think of anything more appealing to a potential employer than to see that a young student (and graduate-to-be) was able to independently generate so much revenue and sell, sell, sell. After this great experience, I'm definitely a step ahead on success in the working world :)

Going into this summer, I really didn't know what i was getting into, but as the summer progressed, I realized that this internship with the Greek Telephone Directory was going to be more beneficial to me than any other job or club I had participated in. I got more real, hands-on experience than I ever could have with any other job. Not only did I make tons of contacts in Ann Arbor which have helped me since (gotten me tons of free stuff), but I learned about the importance of forming relationships. After gaining a large degree of confidence this summer, I can walk up to anyone and start a conversation with them. No matter what school you go to, the GTD is a fantastic opportunity. That is however, if you are interested in marketing/sales, meeting new people, and making money. Working for the GTD will better prepare you for your transition from college to your career than any summer job/internship available. My two year experience with the GTD was priceless, and I realized this only after I started my career. I was leaps and bounds ahead of other people my age because I had already managed accounts, went on business development meetings, and assisted owners in making decisions that would effect their businesses. Here were my options: make $7.00 hr, pick up my bosses laundry, stuff envelopes, and do busy work. Or , develop new business, make new contacts, and earn as much money as I wanted. If a position is open at your school, take a close look at the GTD, it's truly a unique opportunity.

I have worked for the GTD for the past three summers. When I initially signed on in the summer of 2000 I did so because I wanted to make the most money in the shortest amount of time possible. Even though I did just that I also gained from the experience more than I could have ever asked for. I gained sales experience; I bettered my communication skills; I learned how to turn a "no" into a "yes"; but best of all I gained a lasting friendship (and one hell of a business reference) that will do me more good than any of the above mentioned positives. So, if you are thinking about a summer internship I urge you to at least apply for this one. It will be the best decision you will ever make-hands down!

My internship as an account executive for the Greek Telephone Directory has given me the experience of a lifetime. This internship has allowed me to grow as a person while giving me the opportunity to challenge myself. I have learned so many things in the fields of advertising, public relations, marketing, and sales that I would never have been able to learn in the classroom. I will take away many things from my experience at the GTD, but above all I will walk away with the confidence knowing that with hard work, persistence, and communication skills I can accomplish anything.

My experience as an Account Executive for the Greek Directory was more rewarding than any other internship or job I've ever had. Every day I went home knowing that my summer job was benefiting my future and teaching me life lessons that I could never learn in a classroom. I've recently started interviewing for other internships and I've realized that every company respects someone who has worked in sales. If the self satisfaction wasn't enough, then the money definitely was! When all my roommates were complaining about life guarding in the hot sun or sitting in an office all day I was calculating how much money I made that day, thinking about all the awesome connections I made in the community, and wondering what was going to happen the next day that would challenge me more than the day before. There is no better internship a college student can have than the Greek Directory.

Being an Account Executive this last summer for the Greek Telephone Directory was one of the most valuable experiences I have gained so far in college. Not only did I get to learn so much about my college community and all that my campus had to offer but I also built relationships with community and the Greek System at my school. The GTD internship was motivating and after this past summer I felt like I was able to take on anything that confronted me. I not only grew more confident as an individual but the experience also contributed to my leadership role in my chapter as well. I can honestly say that being an account executive for GTD has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've had thus far. Going into my senior year in marketing, this job experience has taught me things that classroom teachings do not provide. This internship with GTD is different than others in that it is so hands on, and you play a crucial role in creating an important publication that benefits the Greek Community, as well as participating businesses. I have gained real life experiences and have made many great business contacts through this internship. It has provided a strong foundation that I need in order to pursue my future career in marketing and sales.

The GTD was a great and new experience for me. You might be looking for that perfect internship, I sure was. The one that pays you ton's of money and doesn't make you slave away in the copy room all day in a business suit. Unfortunately, not everyone can be as lucky as me or the hundred other interns that worked for the Greek Telephone Directory this summer. It began as the result of a random impulse after deciding not to do that "other" internship. After enjoying the sights and sounds of Chicago, meeting new friends, and gaining immense knowledge about "relationship marketing" at the summer training conference, I had no idea what was in store for me. Within the first five minutes on the job, I immediately called my sales manager sobbing because an owner had kicked me out of his store. I remember sitting in the parking lot wondering what I had gotten myself into. However, I was determined not to let this one instance get me down. That day on the phone with Steve, the President and founder of the Greek Telephone Directory, I remember saying that I had aged five years in just one day. Indeed, I had. I learned an important lesson that day: the power of failure. Nothing of value comes without sacrifice. Within the next week, I began to sell like crazy and as they say "the rest is history."
Honestly, I am not a "sales-person" and definitely not "a smooth talker." Just ask anyone who knows me. So, how was I successful this summer? I had fun and worked hard along way. Just from the few months working as an account executive for the directory, I befriended over 200 owners in my area, had numerous job offers, and now get my haircut and eat for free at numerous establishments. The Greek Directory gives you the experience needed to enter into a competitive job market and be able to "sell yourself." This internship has not only opened the window of opportunity for me but has given me the key to success as well. After this summer, I truly believe that I could do anything and sell anything for that matter. I can't wait for next summer!

I was a little apprehensive accepting the internship with GTD, but after leaving the training in Chicago I couldn't wait to start my first day. My GTD experience was very self satisfying because I worked hard and achieved all the goals I set for myself...I reached the top commission % rate, grossed over $17,000 in sales, and had a great time too! This has been, by far, the best job I have ever had in my life and the most money I have ever made! Now I can easily interview for almost any job, and the GTD has given me the proven successful sales experience that employers are looking for. This internship has given me the confidence and experience I need to succeed in the "real world" and I highly recommend it if you are lucky enough to receive an offer.

My summer working for the Greek Directory was priceless. I have never learned so much about myself in such a short amount of time. In four months, I developed my interpersonal communication skills to turn a simple “no” or “maybe” response into a “yes, definitely!” I also set performance goals and exceeded them and the expectations of the company. The experience was challenging and worth more to me than the cash I earned from having it – and believe me, there is no limit to how much money you can make for yourself with this internship. The Greek Directory is a first class business. Everyone received excellent training and gained an invaluable job reference along the way. I could have never asked for a better internship than the Greek Telephone Directory. The internship got me out into the real world interacting with the community and allowed me to gain skills and knowledge that I can apply to my future career. I loved going Iowa City and getting to know all the business owners and helping them come up with ways to attract Greeks to their business. It doesn’t hurt to have the owners know you either when it comes time to eat dinner at their restaurant or buy a workout membership at their club! Everyday was truly different and I never got bored with what I was doing. This internship really taught me how to be self motivated and actually make something happen each and every day. The harder and more dedicated I was to this job, the more I got out it, especially when it came to getting paychecks. As I start to interview for jobs after I graduate, it is great to be able to show potential employers that I have physically helped improve sales for a company, can set high goals and accomplish them, and can work well with various people in the community. I must admit that when I began working for The Greek Telephone Directory I was skeptical about it. I was the first representative for my school and I would be working with the smallest of all the 62 markets that the publication targets. To be completely honest my sales successes started off few and far between and I was having serious doubts about the entire thing. The first couple of weeks were tough but then my training and persistence began to pay off. As the directory was growing so was my ability to inspire confidence in potential advertisers. I realized I was not just selling ads but actually building a publication, establishing good will and creating a client base that hadn't previously existed. I noticed that my interpersonal dynamic and communication skills had greatly improved and were continuing to do so. I could not have predicted how much I would benefit from the work on The Greek Telephone Directory not to mention the income I earned on commission. Now as I apply for jobs in an extremely competitive job market, I am finding the experience I gained working for The Greek Telephone Directory to be extremely helpful and also impressive to interviewers. To those looking for an internship that will offer an experience beyond the secretarial filing, phone answering, and getting coffee for the boss, I urge you to rise to the challenge and responsibilities that come with an internship with The Greek Telephone Directory and you will see the rewards firsthand.

After hearing about the Greek Telephone Directory's Internship Program from a former participant, I knew it would be an interesting experience. I had no idea that interesting would turn out to be nothing short of amazing! Working independently was awesome and the opportunities for success were unlimited. Last summer I was stuffing envelopes and sending faxes for $9 an hour...this summer I was setting my own goals, taking risks, meeting people, managing my own accounts, and making more money than I thought possible for a college intern. The summer before my senior year, I needed to DO something. My major at UNC-Chapel Hill was advertising and I had no experience in the field. A flier for The Greek Telephone Directory internship was posted in the communication center of my sorority house, Alpha Chi Omega, and I decided to call. Steve, the owner, interviewed me over the phone and offered me the position after a series of conversations. At the time, I was excited about the opportunity to work for the GTD. Looking back, that first phone call I made to Steve was the most valuable decision I've ever made. My experience with the GTD taught me to work hard, be persistent at anything I do, and respect both the people I work with and myself. I had never had to try so hard at anything before, but I'd never felt so successful or accomplished either. This internship is not only a way to avoid moving home for the summer; it is a challenging, yet rewarding experience that has been invaluable to me. I now work at an advertising agency in Charlotte, NC and would never have gotten the job had I not had real world or previous sales experience.

The Greek Directory was one of the best summer experiences I've ever invested in. Being a premed major, I was skeptical at first with taking the job because I thought it was better experience for a business student. However, the job helped develop my interpersonal skills like I never thought it could. I learned how to turn a complete stranger into one of my best friends. Looking back, I had know idea what type of impact the Greek Telephone Directory would have on me this past summer. I remember seeing a flyer for the internship on my sorority and all I remembered was, "Make money. Trip to Chicago. Gain great internship experience." Personally, I was sold after seeing the trip to Chicago! Well, it was so much more. When you are an intern for the GTD (as you will come to reference the Greek Telephone Directory after a few weeks!) you truly feel as if you
are running your own business for the summer. The outcome of the book depends on the hard work you put in, (I can not stress this enough). I've always been a responsible person, but this internship introduced me to a new level of responsibility. From my experience I have learned a lot about time management and hard work, but most importantly it taught me how to adapt to different people and different situations. However, after completing the internship, I am now an education major who can sell anything! I am more confident in absolutely everything I do. I am graduating from the University of Iowa in December of this year and have been interviewing with many firms. My summer internship with the GTD was great learning experience. If sales, marketing, or advertising is in your future, then this is a perfect fit. The GTD allowed me to make a real impact on the Greek system at MSU. It was a way to get involved with local business owners, other fraternities and sororities, and the University. I was able to produce a directory that I was proud of, and MSU's Greek system could be proud of as well. The GTD has been a wonderful reference for my resume. On almost every interview I've been on, my perspective employers were extremely interested and impressed with my GTD internship and the business experience it gave me.
